Scrappy Quilted Mug Cozy

A Fabric Quilted Mug Cozy Tutorial

As a quilter and crafter, I always like to find household projects that I can make on my own- especially if I can use my favorite fabric scraps. Enter the Mug Cozy! I have been thinking about making this mug cozy since last fall. If you are anything like me, you drink coffee or tea each morning, and then it is cold by the time I can finish it. I love a hot mug of earl grey tea with some nutpod creamer. I get up early during the week to work before my kids are up, but once they are up, I can never finish my cup. The mug cozy dress up your mug and keeps your drink warm! And if you have to keep microwaving, it keeps your fingers safe from a hot mug.

Mug Cozy

When I saw Alexia Marcelle Abegg’s Golden Hour line for Ruby Star Society, I knew it was the perfect fabric for a morning cup of tea or coffee. It definitely brightens my morning. You can use any quilting scraps to make a scrappier version of the Mug Cozy.

So let’s get started! What will you need?

Step 1: Sew the Half Square Triangles

With this 8 at a time method, you will be making 1 1/2 inch trimmed Half Square Triangles. Take your (2) 5” x 5” scraps. Use a fabric marker or hera marker, and draw 2 diagonal lines from corner to corner. Take the squares right side together to your machine and sew a 1/4” seam on either side of the marks you made.

Step 2: Cut and Trim your Half Square Triangles

Once sewn, bring the square back to your cutting mat. Draw two more marks centered horizontally and vertically with the center point. Then, using your rotary cutter, you will cut along all 4 marker lines you made. Take your Half Square Triangles the iron and press them all open. Trim each Half Square Triangle to 2” square.

Step 3: Assemble your Half Square Triangles

Now you will sew your Half Square Triangles together. In the middle photo you will see the way they should be sewn together. Both sets are sewn the same way. Then you will press the seams, put right sides together and pin at the seams.

Step 4: Assemble the front panel

Take the 2 - 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” strips and the 2 - 3/4” x 11” strips. Sew the 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” square to either side of your assembled HST’s. Press, then sew the 3/4” x 11” strip to the top and bottom and press. Then you will take your batting, backing piece and front panel, and stack them in this order: Batting, panel right side up, backing right side down. Made sure to fold the elastic and stick between the panel and backing layer, tucked inside. Now sew a 1/4” seam all around, leaving a 2” opening to flip the cozy right side out.

Flip right side out. Take the open edge, tuck in, and top stitch 1/8” all around the Mug Cozy. Then you will sew a button on the opposite side of the elastic.

I found that my Mug Cozy fit on multiple different size mugs. I machine quilted in the ditch and then added some hand quilting details. Enjoy quilting and sewing!
